Four Secrets to a Healthy Summer Glow

Four Products You'll Always Find in My Beach Bag

There is no better feeling than when the summer sun soaks into your skin and makes your TummyToy sparkle. Not only does the sun's warmth feel great, it is also a great source of Vitamin D. Unfortunately, although the sun has many positive elements about it, the UV rays cause damage to our skin, hair and health.

Now that summer is here, I find it is important to have four products in my beach bag to protect my hair and skin from the sun, and still enjoy the outdoors!

1. Sunscreen!

I apply 15 SPF every single day. At the beach I love the types you can just spray on, like Banana Boat Sport SPF 15 (Waterproof). I also use a daily lotion that has sun protection in it. Aveeno's Active Naturals Daily Moisturizes with SPF 15 leaves my skin protected and soft for 24 hours. For faces, I use SPF 30 and up. NEUTROGENA ULTRA SHEER Face Sunscreen is great because it is waterproof and sweat proof and contains moisturizing antioxidant vitamins A, C and E. You can find these products at CVS and Wal-Mart.

2. UV Protection Leave-in Conditioner.

I love leave-in Uv conditioners like Uv Rescue Shimmering Oil Leave-in Protective Smoother by Redken and Neutrogena Triple Moisture Silk Touch Leave-In Cream. I just use a dime size amount right before I spend a day in the sun. It gives my hair a soft and healthy feeling and protects the color so it won't fade! You can find these products at CVS and Wal-Mart.

3. UV Protection for Lips

Burt's Bees Res-Q Lip Balm SPF 15 and Sugar Lip Treatment SPF 15 work great to protect your lips from the sun. They keep your lips smooth and kissable all summer! Burts Bee's is sold at a variety of stores like CVS and Wal-Mart. You can find Sugar Products at Sephora.

4. Hair, Skin & Nail Vitamins.

I take one of Nature Valley's Hair, Skin & Nail Vitamins every morning and have seen a huge difference in the way my hair, skin and nails look and feel. CVS, Walgreens, and GNC carry these vitamins.

This week has been Gay Pride Week in Boston and TummyToys is a full supporter of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans-gender) rights.

It has been six years since the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts legalized same-sex marriages. Making Massachusetts the first U.S. state to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. To this day, only 4 of the 50 states and 1 federal district have followed suit; in addition to 3 other states recognizing same-sex marriages, but not granting same-sex licenses.

Gay rights has been a long fighting, controversial issue. Beyond just same-sex marriages. Did you know that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has instituted a lifetime ban on all men who have sex with men from giving blood? Despite shortages of blood at banks across the country. Fact is, a lot more needs to be done to advance equality for LGBT individuals. At the end of the day, are we all not human? Should we all not be entitled to the same rights and benefits and protections under the law?

It seems as though in today's society, people aren't as active in protesting and fighting for issues as we were in the 1960s and 1970s. Tattooing became an important feature of Japanese urban popular culture  in the early 19th century, influenced strongly by the success of a  series of woodblock prints featuring Chinese martial arts heroes with  spectacular tattoos, vividly imagined by the artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi.  Tattoo artists copied designs from the prints and invented new designs  that were, in turn, depicted in later prints. "Under the Skin: Tattoos  in Japanese Prints" explores the social background, iconography, and  visual splendor of Japanese tattoos through the prints that helped carry  the art from the streets of 19th-century Japan to 21st-century tattoo  shops all over the world.

Is Gold Body Jewelry OK?

I wrote a post earlier about sterling silver and its appropriate place in the body jewelry world. I thought I would continue the trend and give you some information about the other metals we use here at TummyToys! In this case, 14k gold.

Gold has been valued for thousands of years. It is an incredibly beautiful metal that was accessible to ancient cultures, and because of its natural ductility they were able to work it with there primitive tools. Because of this long history, gold is the most popular precious metal in all the corners of the world.

Diamond Pave Belly Ring with 1/4 Ct Diamond Pendant

In current times gold has taken on many different transformations. There are many different karats available 10k, 14k, 18k, 22k, 24k, and seemingly endless colors as well. All these various karats and colors are achieved through the addition of different metals to the pure gold in a process called alloying.

24 karat gold is pure gold. It has a gorgeous deep gleaming gold color, but is quite soft and therefore only appropriate for jewelry that wont see much wear and tear.

18k gold is 75% pure gold and 25% other metals. The 25% of other metals give the alloy better strength and durability, and softens the intense color of pure gold. You won't see 18k gold made into different colors very often since the 25% of different metals isn't really enough to do the trick.

The most common alloy for gold, and the one we use here at TummyToys, is 14k gold. 14k gold is 58.3 percent pure gold and 41.7% other metals. This higher percentage of other metals makes 14k gold very strong and durable, as well as allows for many different color variations to be produced. You can get it in yellow, pink, white, green and brown, with new alloys being produced all the time. Since body jewelry sustains closer contact with your body than normal jewelry, you have to be sure the other metals in the gold alloys aren't dangerous. The one to really watch out for is white gold.

Traditionally to make white gold the dominant metal in the alloy (besides gold) is nickel, which many people are allergic too. Luckily many white gold alloys are made today using other metals, such as palladium or platinum, which achieve the beautiful look of white gold without the dangers of nickel. All the metals used by TummyToys are guaranteed nickel free!
10k gold is 41.7% pure gold and 58.3% other metals. The high percentage of other metals makes 10k very very strong and durable, but tends to wash out the color of the gold a bit.

Because of the decreased color, and higher possibility of nickel being in the alloy, 10k gold isn't used that often in the body jewelry world. It's excellent strength and lower price point make 10k gold a good choice for more traditional jewelry. Once again, it all comes down to being aware of what your putting in your body! Be smart and only choose the best. TummyToys of course!

Is Sterling Silver Body Jewelry OK?

We have had a few questions about the use of sterling silver in body jewelry, so I thought I'd clarify its appropriate use.
Traditional sterling silver is 925 parts pure silver and 75 parts other metals such as nickel and copper. Pure silver on its own is too soft to be used in most jewelry applications. Alloying pure silver with metals such as nickel and copper give it the strength and durability needed to stand up to daily wear and tear. Unfortunately, nickel is a metal that many people are very allergic to. It can cause some pretty serious rash's depending on an individuals sensitivity level. Because of this, traditional sterling silver should NOT be used for body jewelry.
Thanks to new alloys that have been developed, sterling silver can be an EXCELLENT choice for body jewelry. These new alloys have 925 parts silver like normal sterling, but the other 75 parts are made up of other metals which are hypo-allergenic, but still provide the strength and durability required. The alloy that TummyToys uses in all of the silver belly rings is nickel-free and safe for all body piercings. This is a boon for body jewelry enthusiasts, not only is sterling silver one of the brightest precious metals, it is also considerably less expensive than a white gold or platinum. So don't be intimidated of sterling silver in body jewelry. Just make sure it's made using an appropriate alloy!

I previously posted about the often over looked proximity of the Bahama's to the coast of Florida, making it a wonderful and practical vacation destination for those of us living in the eastern United States. Since I have written that post it has got me thinking about other island getaways I would someday like to visit, including the Portuguese island of Madeira! Madeira is a wonderful sub-tropical island in the north-western Atlantic ocean about 320 miles off the coast of Morocco. When first discovered by the Portuguese around 1420 there were no human beings living on the island. Because of this the residents of Madeira trace their heritage back to mainland Portugal, but have developed a regional identity and culture all their own. Although not nearly as convenient to the east coast as the Bahamas, the unique culture and beautiful setting guarantee an amazing adventure. Anyone who lives in a cold climate knows how damaging the snow and ice can be on our footwear. Especially on leather and suede boots. Whether you're walking in the snow or trying to avoid that puddle, you may find yourself with white salt marks around the bottom of your shoes. Here's a great way to get rid of them.

Things You'll Need

1 cup of warm water
1 tablespoon of vinegar
Towel / Rag
Leather/Suede polisher

Mix the water and vinegar together in a bowl
Dip the towel/rag into the solution, wring it out until damp and wipe your shoes where the marks are visible. Continue until all the salt is gone.
Allow your shoes to sit for about a day or until fully dry
Finish by spraying your shoes with leather/suede shoe polisher. Continue to use the polisher sparingly to protect your shoes from the weather and any further damage.

Cleaning your body jewelry do’s and don’ts

There are lots of ways to clean your jewelry so below are a few pointers and at the very bottom are a list of don’t you will find these humorous and I personally know the people that have done these things because I am the one who had to repair or replace the jewelry.

Gold and silver need to be handled differently so lets start with silver and the tarnish. Tarnish is not dirt or harmful to you it is a natural oxidization of the metal and it will go from a light brown to a deep black. Wearing your jewelry into a hot tub will tarnish it. I am a strong believer in Tarnex you just dip the jewelry in the Tarnex wiggle about for a few seconds (this doesn’t do anything just keeps your hands and head busy while you are waiting) take it out of the Tarnex and then rinse your jewelry under warm water pat dry and then give a polish with a silver polishing cloth. This is treated with a chemical that will put the shiny finish back on the jewelry.

Remember to soak your body jewelry in alcohol before you put it back in and make sure it is free of other chemicals.

Gold is much simpler because it is normally oil and creams that are making it look dirty. Take 1 cap full of Top Job and 1 cup Hot tap water (not boiled) mix the 2 together and let the jewelry sit for 5-10 minutes. Pull it out and rinse with hot water and pat dry. Repeat if necessary, or use an old soft tooth brush to give a good scrub.

Now that brings up a point Toothpaste will remove tarnish on silver but it is not a good option the reason it removes tarnish is it is an abrasive so it is scratching it off like a very fine sandpaper. Best to invest in Tarnex and a good polishing cloth it will last for years.

Pearls, Corals, wood, bone, amber and Opals (and anything once living) should be treated with more care and kept away from harsh chemicals. You can use a Q-Tip to apply Tarnex to the tarnish and hold the gems in a paper towel.

Inside trade secret find a jeweler that has a polishing machine ultrasonic and steamer. Bring 1 or 2 items to them and ask to have them cleaned they will do this for you at no charge! If you bring more than that they will take them in and some jewelers will charge you.

The List of DON’TS

DON’T soak your jewelry in Tarnex it will turn blacker than it was in the first place

DON’T boil your jewelry in any cleaning product!!! Bleach, ammonia, top job fantastic. 2 things will happen one you will gas yourself out of the house, second you will RUIN all of your jewelry.

DON”T Microwave your jewelry very bad for the microwave

DON’T cook your jewelry in the oven in a cleaner this will also make a mess because the jewelry tends to bake to the pan you are cooking it in.

Taking care of your belly ring when first pierced.

Piercing your belly button is a quick, pain-free process and done in a second. But the pain does not come until after, at that moment your belly button will be sensitive and you will need to take good care of it because you do not want it to get infected.

First off the summer is a bad time to pierce your belly button because you cannot go into any type of water unless it contains sea salt and that means that the beach is the only place you can enjoy the water. So if you are a beach bum then you are perfectly fine. After showering you will need to clean it and that is where the H2Ocean comes in. You just spray it on after every shower (3-4 times a day is also good), it contains Purified Water, Sea Salt, Lysozyme and Sodium Benzoate which are all found in the bodies’ metabolism. This spray will take good care of your belly button and help it heal perfect!

Alcohol is not good to use in the beginning because it will damage the wound. Hydrogen peroxide or Betadine is also not good because it will kill the cells that form scaring tissue.

Your belly piercing will take about 12 weeks to heal because it is on your waist. To heal completely, it may be 3-4 month but on others it may be longer. I had to learn the hard way. DO NOT CHANGE THE BELLY RING UNTIL IT HAS FULLY SCARED BECAUSE CHANGING IT IN THE PROCESS OF HEALING WILL CAUSE AN INFECTION OR YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO PUT IT BACK IN THE PIERCING.

Another thing that is good to do is, when you spray the H2Ocean slide the belly ring up and down, just enough so that the belly ring is not stuck from the crust because trust me when I say this when you let it sit there, it will get stuck and when you go to move it, it will hurt. DO NOT DO IT CONSTANTLY OR TURN THE RING IN THE PIERCING, THIS WILL IRRITATE THE BELLY BUTTON EVEN MORE. BE GENTLE!

What about surgical steel?

This is a topic that will cause much controversy so let me start with I have been a jeweler working with metals for 24 years. I am a gemologist and an appraiser as well. So this is my expert opinion.

Surgical steel is a grade of steel that can be used in the medical field to make equipment or implants. The steel can take a high polish and retain that luster and in most cases not discolor.

Surgical steel can have up to 14% nickel in it and for this reason is not as popular as it used to be in implants. This nickel can cause a rash like reaction red, goopy, blisters, bumps and itchy. It is commonly confused with an infection. If you are suffering with this reaction or a piercing that won’t heal I recommend moving into a gold, platinum or palladium TummyToy.

Unfortunately, the reason that 316L surgical steel is so popular is because it is cheep. A barbell made in China with an external screw and ball will cost well under a dollar to manufacture and they do these by the hundreds of thousands. They are not designed for beauty or style but, for quickest production. That is why they fall apart and have no guarantees. A TummyToy is designed with the customer in mind. Peridot (pronounced pair-a-doe) is the birthstone of August. Peridot is one of the few gemstones that come in only one color. Their rich, green color with the slight tinge of gold is caused by very fine traces of iron.

The origin of its name is uncertain, but here are a few theories:
- Peridot is derived from the Greek word 'peridona', which roughly translates 'to give richness'.

- From the French word 'peritot' which means 'unclear', probably due to the inclusions and cloudy nature of large stones.

- It could also be from the Arabic word 'faridat' which means 'gem'.

Peridot was the favorite gemstone of Cleopatra, whose famous "Emerald" jewelry was actually made with Peridots.

People wear the stone because it is supposed to bring the wearer success, peace, and good luck. Peridot is given as a symbol of fame, dignity, and protection.

Legend has it that pirates favored peridot to protect them against evil. When the peridot was set in gold it also protected the wearer from terrors in the night. In ancient times, it was believed that a dream about peridot was a warning of impending danger.

It is the US State gemstone for Nevada.

What I'm about to tell you will make you afraid.

Probably very afraid.

But more importantly it has the potential of making you a bucket load of money.

Listen carefully: A woman living in downtown Ontario, Canada came out of her house and saw 3 old men with long white beards sitting in her front yard.

She did not recognize them.

She said "I don't think I know you, but you must be hungry. Please come in and have something to eat."

"Is the man of the house home?" they asked.

"No", she replied. "He's out."

"Then we cannot come in", they replied.

In the evening when her husband came home, she told him what had happened.

"Go tell them I am home and invite them in!

The woman went out and invited the men in.

"We do not go into a house together," they replied.

"Why is that?" she asked.

One of the old men explained: "His name is Wealth," he said pointing to one of his friends, and said pointing to another one, "He is Success, and I am Love." Then he added, "Now go in and discuss with your husband which one of us you want in your home."

The woman went in and told her husband what was said.

Her husband was overjoyed. "How nice!! he said. "Since that's the case, let's invite Wealth. Let him come and fill our home with wealth!"

His wife disagreed. "My dear, why don't we invite Success?"

Their daughter was listening from the other corner of the house. She jumped in with her own suggestion: "Would it not be better to invite Love? Our home will then be filled with love!"

"Let us heed our daughter's advice," said the husband to his wife.

"Go out and invite Love to be our guest."

The woman went out and asked the 3 old men, "Which one of you is Love? Please come in and be our guest."

Love got up and started walking toward the house. The other 2 also got up and followed him. Surprised, the lady asked Wealth and Success: "I only invited Love, why are you coming in?"

The old men replied together: "If you had invited Wealth or Success, the other two of us would've stayed out, but since you invited Love, wherever he goes, we go with him. Wherever there is Love, there is also Wealth and Success!"
